Pop Art

A bit about Pop art

Pop art is an art movement that started in the mid – 1950’s, in Britain. It then evolved in the United States in the lat 50’s, among the early artists that shaped the pop art movement were Eduardo Paolozzi and Richard Hamilton in Britain, and Larry Rivers, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns among others in the United States.

Pop art wasn’t accepted in the art world before when it first started, this is because you could have ready made objects like the famous soup can and repeated the photo. This wasn’t appreciated and wasn’t considered art as it was just a photo of a soup can.  Pop art is can be very colour full and eye catching, which makes it interesting , it can either be the images and colours used or event the text or slogan can be consider as pop art now.

Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist.

What well-known publication has Barbara Kruger imitated to
make this image?

Most of her art work are targeted for vogue, vanity fair, glamour and Time magazine. This is because Barbara Kruger was a feminist artist.  This piece of work is from Time magazine with the traditional red borders and white text.

What text has she

Her text are mostly all slogans or life quotes that are play on words. Like the one above  which says “I shop therefore I am”. This quote comes from the original quote “I think therefore i am”. This can suggest that what you think is what you become, and makes us think in a psychologic

What technique has she used
to create the image, and why is
it appropriate?

For this image Barbara Kruger used silk screen print and acrylic. This is appropriate because oil would make it too realistic and has more texture where as acrylic is more flat.

How could this be a satirical image?

It could satirical as its an authenticity piece of work as its being mass-producing, as silk prints are used over and over again.

Barbara Kruger is a conceptual artist that is from America and is born on January 1946 and is now age 71. She has a conceptual artist and has made a movie called “!Women Art Revolution”.

Babara Kruger work includes black and white photos overlaid with declarative captions on top that are usually in white text over a red border/background. This is because her type of art was of the period of contemporary art time; therefore making her artwork have a more contemporary feel, as they are bold and eye-catching. Plus the images and text over it aren’t something you would usually see in old art and the lay out is just in more of a contemporary and modern way of art. Kruger work is minimalist to colour as she only uses black and white photo however in each piece there is a pop of red, kruger probably did this to catch the attention of peoples eyes as red is the first colour peoples eyes catch.

I like the way Kruger artwork have a more contemporary feel and looks more modern. I also like how she uses distorted images or images that you wouldn’t normal see and that could be offensive. I also like the way she puts bold text over her work.
