What is shock art?
Shock art is a contemporary art that includes disturbing imagery, around, scents or meaning to create shocking experience. it is a way to disturb, complacent and hypocritical people. Shock art fits well with Unit 76 and the topic “Risk” as shock art is seen as a risk in the art world, shock art is seen as a risk as shock artist like tracy min get a lot of criticism plus the work might to be pleasant to some people therefore it would be taking a risk to show something don’t people don’t want to see and get a good reaction out of it.
Yoko Ono is a performance artist, singer, songwriter and peace activist. Ono’s work can be seen as shock art as her work is very unusual. One of her most famous work is called “Cut Piece” and was done in 1965. This work is a performed piece of work and it is her on stage where she allows people to come up on stage and cut bits of her clothes off. This is seen as shock art as some people don’t get why or find it shocking that she is allowing people to cut off pieces of her clothes and basically being strip down.
Zhan Huan is a Chinese artist based in shanghai and New York City. He began his career as a painter and then transitioned to performance art before making a comeback to painting. The reason I have decided to look in to his artwork is because I feel like his work counts as “Shock art”, the reason being one of his most famous piece is his “Meat” series. You can see in the first image Zhan Huan uses raw meat and other animal products in his work, which can be unpleasant to some peoples eyes. The reason Huan is known as a shock artist is because he uses his own body to experiment how much his body can take, an example was he used his own body and suspended himself from a ceiling whilst slowly dripping blood. This is shock art as it is disturbing to look at and may of course come in to a shock for people.
Gilbert and Geroge are two artists who work together as a collaborative duo. Their art is very contemporary and known as shock art. This is because most of their art is very varied when it comes to media, however they do a lot of work based in churches. Most of their art are taking the mickey out of the churchs glass window, and the reason it is shocking It back they but naked bodies all over and even used the image of poop to create a cross.
